Why Showing a Video Clip is More Convincing Than Showing a Stat
Here’s a location that sees an average of 36 midblock pedestrian crossing per day.
On its own, that number tells you something is happening. It tells you this is not an isolated event. But it doesn’t tell you how those crossings occur, what people are navigating, or how close those interactions get.
Now consider this moment from that same stretch of roadway.
Both representations describe conditions at the same location, but they leave very different impressions. As Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman noted, “No one ever made a decision because of a number. They need a story.”
The video clip provides that story. It shows how the crossing unfolds and highlights how little margin for error exists once it begins.
A count can point you to a location, but it doesn’t reveal what people are dealing with at that moment. Watching the movement does.
That difference matters when the situation needs to be explained.
Engineers are trained to describe conditions using numbers. That approach works for technical audiences, but most decisions aren’t made that way. People decide based on whether they understand what is happening and why it matters.
A number requires interpretation; a video clip does not.
It shows what someone is working through in real time, how quickly things can change, and how little margin exists once they do. That is what people respond to.
This isn’t about replacing one with the other. The number still has value. It tells you where to look.
The clip changes how the conversation unfolds once you get there.
